Vitamin D supplementation in women undergoing IVF treatment

15th Congress of the Hellenic Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology: 2-5 September 2021, Athens, Greece

In the 15th Congress of the Hellenic Society of Obtetrics and Gynaecology, 2-5 September 2021, we are presenting the preliminary findings of our ongoing research that looks at the association of serum vitamin D levels and IVF treatment outcomes, in women initiated in vitamin D supplements.

43 women were checked for serum vitamin D levels prior to controlled ovarian stimulation and those found insufficient were started on vitamin D supplements. Serum vitamin D levels were measured at three different times during IVF treatment: T1. initiation of ovarian stimulation T2. embryotransfer day, T3. beta-hCG test. Results were associated with the chance of clinical pregnancy.

In addition, the above group of women that started vitamin D supplementation was compared with a control group of women which did not undergo routine screening for vitamin D levels and results were associated with the chance of clinical pregnancy.

Our findings found no association neither between vitamin D levels in the three different times specified and IVF treatment outcome, nor between the screened group of women that had vitamin D supplementation and the control group which did not undergo routine screening.

Our preliminary study findings have not supported a beneficial role of vitamin D supplementation in terms of clinical pregnancy rates

Despite the well described beneficial effects of vitamin D in female reproduction and the association between low vitamin D levels and poorer IVF outcomes, our preliminary study findings have not supported a beneficial role of vitamin D supplementation in terms of clinical pregnancy rates, accepting the limitation of the small number of cases analysed so far.
